The brake master cylinder is composed of a cylinder block, pistons, a return spring, rubber sealing elements (like sealing cups), and a center valve. Its operation is straightforward: when the brakes are applied, the pistons, pushed by the pushrod connected to the brake pedal, increase the pressure within the working chamber, forcing brake fluid into the wheel cylinders.

In line with advancements in ABS and ESP systems, the master cylinder has evolved through compensating, center valve, and plunger modes, all operating on the same fundamental principle. Today, most regions require passenger vehicles to use a double-circuit braking system for safety, with the tandem double-cavity master cylinder being a common design, differing only in how the circuits are assigned to diagonal or front-rear axle wheels.

Common Failures

Soft Brake Pedal: A soft feeling in the brake pedal indicates a potential issue with the master cylinder's ability to maintain pressure, often due to worn seals causing internal leaks, or external leaks in hoses or wheel cylinders.

No Free Travel: An abnormally hard brake pedal can be a sign of blocked compensating holes, possibly due to impurities in the brake fluid or a deformed sealing cup. It can also be caused by improper installation of the master cylinder or booster, leading to abnormal piston movement.

Brake Fluid Leaks: Leaks are common and can occur if the master cylinder and brake fluid tank are not properly installed, or if the sealing elements have aged and worn. Incorrect installation or corrosion of the oil outlets can also lead to fluid leakage.

Most vehicles are equipped with a brake oil level sensor that triggers dashboard alarms when fluid levels are abnormal, prompting a thorough check for leaks in the braking system.
